Thai Cultural Landscape

FOREWORD

In 1991, H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn initiated the publication of Illustrated Landforms of Thailand, that shows a variety of geographical conditions ofThailand through illustration. While on field visits, the photographic team saw at first hand that aspects of geographical environment, ranging from settlement, terrain, to natural resources, water sources and climate, play a major role in shaping up different cultures for Thai people living in various regions of Thailand. This revelation has inspired the publication of this book as contribution to the efforts to make known and conserve Thai cultural landscape on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of His Majesty's Accession to the Throne.
In order to realize this publication, the Publication Committee has conducted research and collected field data through surveys, observations and interviews. New photographs were taken at a large variety of locations after lengthy investigation as required by the content of the book. It has been established that geographical environment is an important factor that determines the lifestyle of Thai people in the North, the Northeast, the East, the South, the West and the Central Region. Its influence is apparent in the people's livelihood, habitat, food, clothing, medicine, customs and traditions, wisdom, belief, religion, art and science. This Thai cultural landscape has been developed, promoted, supported and conserved by His Majesty the King whose tireless efforts are devoted to improving his subjects' quality of life.
The Publication Committee has spent three long years in preparing the text, taking photographs and readying the manuscript. The team is totally committed to creating a socially meaningful piece of work that may contribute as much as possible to an understanding of the development of Thai cultural landscape in the international community.
